Brainspotting and Sports Therapy: healing athletic problems that do not respond to traditional treatments

Some athletes developed problems that appear to be motor coordination issues but do not respond to traditional treatments like cognitive-behavioral therapy, physical therapy, or strength and conditioning.

Imagine a quarterback receives a bad head concussion from a blind-sided sack. After that, he just can’t seem to “get it back” and he appears to be frightened of standing in the pocket. Or imagine a mountain biker  taking a bad fall during a race, after his front wheel jack-knifes on a slippery wet root. Then he can’t get back on his bike, even for non-competitive biking.

Brainspotting therapy was developed in recognition of the fact that eye positions correlate to inner neural and emotional experience. These eye positions, or Brainspots, may lead to a healing and resolution of issues held deeply in the non-verbal, non-cognitive areas of the neurophysiology.

A Brainspot is a point in visual space that a client has a strong reaction to. When a Brainspot is stimulated, the deep brain appears to reflexively signal the therapist that the source of the problem has been found. A “Brainspot” is the eye position which is related to the energetic/emotional activation of a traumatic/emotionally charged issue within the brain, most likely in the amygdala, the hippocampus, or the orbitofrontal cortex of the limbic system.

For the quarterback example, a handful of Brainspotting sessions may be able to get the quarterback returned to optimal performance. For the biker example, Brainspotting can help extract the fear of future falls. The biker will still recall what happened, but the distressing emotion will be eliminated.
