ADHD Counseling: Comics

I recently discovered these great websites with ADHD comics that I wanted to share with you:

  • ADHD comics were created by Dani Donovan in Nebraska. These are all related to mental health issues that people with ADHD struggle with. Examples are: ADHD paralysis, finishing tasks, multitasking, procrastination, being late, emotional dysregulation and others. The comics often compare the thought process of a person with ADHD to the thought process of a person who doesn’t have ADHD – which might be useful for relationships where one partner has ADHD and the other one doesn’t.

CHADD.org says: “Dani Donovan proves that sometimes the best way to educate others about a disability, disorder, or difference is through humor and simplicity. Her comics aim to validate the suffering experienced by people affected by ADHD, who often feel misunderstood and isolated. Donovan’s visuals illustrate her personal journey and struggle by showing others what the world looks like through her eyes.”

In a 2019 interview with AdditudeMag.com, Dani said: “I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 18. It was never a huge problem for me academically, but I did have trouble socially. I’ve always been chatty, with poor impulse control. I didn’t have many friends. I went to a behavioral psychologist because I was feeling down and struggling with extreme sadness, but she realized that my symptoms stemmed from undiagnosed ADHD. My ADHD diagnosis actually was a relief. It felt good to finally have answers and to let go of some of the shame and guilt I had, thinking I was a massive screw-up. There really was an explanation for why I had these sorts of difficulties and getting diagnosed helped me piece it all together.”

  • ADHD Alien comics were created by Pina in Germany. These describe daily struggles with ADHD and propose various solutions options. Pina says: “What I talk about in my comics is so shunned upon and made me feel embarrassed all my life and I just want my fellow Aliens to know they’re not alone. Even though not everyone with ADHD is like me or makes the same experiences, we all suffer from the same stigma.”

Enjoy!
