Training: Assessing Adults for Autism and ADHD

I was honored to be invited to co-teach Master’s and Doctoral level clinicians with Dr. Leslie Carter on how to assess adults for ADHD and Autism.

Neurodivergent adults with ADHD or those on the Autistic Spectrum often have a harder time accessing quality mental health services. They struggle to manage families, keep jobs, access agency support, and receive appropriate medical and mental health care. Many of them cannot afford an expensive evaluation. Fortunately, most clients do not require a comprehensive doctoral level diagnosis to start neurodiversity-affirmative psychotherapy, family treatment, medication management, or addiction services.

The goal of this training is to build the confidence of Master’s and Doctoral level clinicians in screening adults for ADHD and Autism, therefore, making access to higher quality care easier
and less expensive.

The objectives of this training are:

  • Describe the DSM-5-TR ADHD and ASD criteria.
  • Review inexpensive ADHD adult assessment tools like the DIVA-5, Conners, and Barkley adult rating scales.
  • Learn how to use and score the adult Ritvo Autism Asperger’s Diagnostic Scale (RAADS-R).
  • Assess additional diagnostic tools which help rule out common comorbid conditions.
  • Describe treatment options and referral recommendations beneficial to affected clients.

Following the training, Dr. Carter and I conduct a free monthly consultation group that clinicians who completed the training can join to expand their knowledge, develop skills, consult on cases or on specific assessments.
