You have thought long and hard about starting therapy and now you are finally ready to reach out and schedule an appointment. You brace yourself for the call, you dial the number … you get the voice mail. Now what?
It might be helpful to think of your first call to a therapist in the same way you think of an informational job interview. You plan the questions you want to ask to make sure the therapist is the right fit for you, and clarify their specialty, availability, location, and fees. Then you reach out and schedule this initial appointment.
As it turns out, this first call is very important to the therapist too. Just like you, the therapist needs to mentally prepare for the call to assess if they can help you, if your needs are in the scope of their practice, if you are having a mental health emergency, and to describe their services to you in an accessible way. They wouldn’t be able to engage in this conversation with you if they are with a client, if the client is waiting in their front lobby, if they are consulting with their colleagues, or doing things like driving, exercising, or eating lunch.
As a solo practitioner, I am the only one who could answer the call from the client and I am usually not in a position to be able to answer a call that’s not scheduled. The best ways to reach me are, in the order of preference:
- Book a free 20-minute phone consultation immediately;
- Email me to schedule your consultation – firstname.lastname@example.org;
- Text me to schedule your consultation – 503-770-0810;
- Leave me a voicemail at 503-770-0810 and I will text you to schedule your consultation.
